Sermon- Spirit Ch3- Sprit of Power: Becoming a stronger person- inside out
Intro: Power.
Spirit is intensely personal, and intensely practical!
2 Tim 1:7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline
This week talking about power, next 2 weeks love and self-discipline
What would it look like to you if I were to say, “Wow, you’re really powerful!” Wealthy? Influence? Telling people what to do? Fame? Bench press 500lb? Flying?
-Now, with that picture in mind, how powerful are you?
Power Check:
Bottom-line, we’re weak! Even with the strengths that God has given us, we have chinks in our armor. But with the power of HS working from the inside out, God does significant and lasting things through us.
Willpower v Spirit’s power
Powerless Christianity- 2 Tim 3
Gives true religion a bad name.
Ex. I thought Cians were weenies, wimpy.
Ex. Man went out to start his car, didn’t work, discovered his motor had been stolen! Trying to live a Cian life without God’s Spirit is like trying to start up a car with no motor.
God’s commands are not burdensome, but “light” (1 Jn 5:3, Matt 11:30) not bec they’re easy but bec Yahweh himself contributes the power to accomplish them!
1. Power from the inside out.
Eph 3:16-21
16I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.
-Strengthening in our “inner being”- for those of us that are muscularly challenged this is really encouraging! Extra energy, greater dynamism, stamina, vim and vigor, impact
How do you perceive God? Powerful, absolutely adores you and wants to empower you?
-We’ve all seen the popular football players of high school 20 years later with their hair loss and pot bellies. That strength doesn’t sustain.
-However, look at a guy like Mike Fontenot- recently left Va Bch to serve the church in Sydney Australia. Serving, making a difference. Most people his age are preparing for retirement. I asked him- what retirement? No sign of slowing down.
Not our own power, but from God.
Sun, Moon- reflecting God’s glory
One New Year’s Day, in the Tournament of Roses parade, a beautiful float suddenly sputtered and quit. It was out of gas. The whole parade was held up until someone could get a can of gas. The amusing thing was this float represented the Standard Oil Company. With its vast oil resources, its truck was out of gas.
2. The power of WHY. Feel the love.
And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Love motivates us to do crazy things.
Ex. Ryan proposing to Lacy. Vomiting (not sure if from nerves or food poisoning)
How much more should we be motivated that Yahweh, our Creator, wants to live in us.
The power of WHY. Golden Circle.
When it really sinks in how loved we are, nothing will stop us from pleasing God. If you’re struggling with the willpower to get to church, to get discipling, to share your faith, then what is probably lacking most is the WHY- feeling the love.
Pray- God, I want to feel loved by you. He wants to answer that prayer. Study Sin/Cross.
-together with all the saints/Lord’s holy people- the power of TEAM
3. End small thinking.
20Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
Paul busts out in this spontaneous doxology in the middle of his letter.
Challenge: We want the glorySmall results. It’s HIS power, HIS will, HIS world, HIS mission. It’s not about meBig results
-God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. I can ask for a lot, but God can do more! Take some time. Imagine what God can do through you! Put an end to small thinking. Is our aim to make a cute little ministry or to evangelize three cities, support missions around the world, impact all people?
Energy to get up in the morning- how many snoozes does it take?
Energy to maintain balance and perspective- J was not reactionary
Energy to remain outward focused
As Paul closes: AMEN! So be it!
