DAVID’S NOTES:
In the Arlington Cemetery, Arlington Virginia, there exists the Tomb of the Unknowns also known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This is a monument dedicated to the American Service members who have died without their remains being identified. It is awe inspiring to witness the changing of the guard and the honor that is given to those who have died for our country. Inscribed on this monument are the words, ‘Here rests in honored glory, an American soldier known but to God’. What will be inscribed on your tombstone (she was a loving mother; he was a devoted husband and father)? Over the last month, I have lost my last surviving grandmother and one of my uncles. I realize more and more as I get older the impact a life can have.
By Faith Enoch Pleased God
Genesis 5:18-24
John Sailhamer, an Old Testament Scholar wrote: Why does the author want to point to Enoch so specifically as an exception? It is not merely because he did not die. That in itself is reason enough to merit special attention, but it does not sufficiently explain the purpose of the author in this case. The author’s purpose can be better seen in the way he has emphasized, through repetition, that Enoch “walked with God” (vv. 22, 24). The phrase “walked with God”. . . clearly means something to the author, for he uses the same expression to describe Noah as “a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time” (6:9), and Abraham and Isaac as faithful servants of God (17:1; 24:40; 48:15). Its use here shows that the author views it as the reason why Enoch did not die. Enoch is pictured as one who did not suffer the fate of Adam (“you will die”) because, unlike the others, he “walked with God.”17Here then is a glimpse of grace in the midst of the spread of sin (death being a result of sin). Here the funeral bell stops tolling. One man walked with God and God took him.18 He escaped the clutches of death. Clearly the pathway to life, the road one is to travel to escape the sting of death, is the one of the pilgrim, in which a person walks with God.
This is a study of a remarkable man of God who had an incredible impact. The Bible tells us nothing about the early years of Enoch. What we do know is that at the age of 65, Enoch became the father of a child which he named Methuselah. After that child was born, we are told that Enoch walked with God for the next/another 300 years of his life. There is something to be said of having children which could force you to walk closer with God. But I believe we are talking about significant events/significant moments God uses to draw us closer to Him. Share about Leslie being in the hospital in January.
Let us look at Enoch and his walk with God a little closer.
Please turn your Bibles over to the book of Hebrews, chapter 11.
The term “to walk” is also translated “manner of life”. Enoch’s manner of life was of being with God. There was a closeness and companionship between Enoch and the Lord. He recognized that he was in the presence of Jehovah. We have the same privilege as did Enoch. We too can experience an incredible level of intimacy with God—we can have our manner of life be with God. We can walk with God.
Point: By Faith Enoch Pleased God
Hebrews 11:1-6
Enoch wanted nothing more than to please God. Do you realize that you and I can be pleasing to God? When was the last time we asked, “Lord, what does it really mean to be pleasing to you? What does it really mean to walk with you? God created us to bring Him Glory and to be pleasing to Him. Illustration of David Jr and how trusting he is/sports (a simple faith to accept that we can be pleasing to our Heavenly Father). Remember how out of the overflow of our heart/love, we…
We are told twice in these verses that “Enoch walked with God.” That is not Enoch’s testimony of his life; that is the testimony of the Holy Spirit concerning Enoch’s life. God looked at Enoch’s life and saw a man whose life pleased the Lord,
The word “walk” is a biblical expression for “fellowship and obedience that results in divine favor.” It refers to a manner of life that results in a person living in nearness to the Lord. This is the kind of walk Enoch had with God. It is the kind of walk Amos refers to in Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed. It is a walk of dedication and devotion. It is a walk in which Enoch lives up to His name. The name Enoch means “Dedicated.”
The kind of walk that Enoch exhibited is the same kind of walk that needs to be seen in your life and mine.
It would seem that Enoch lived a life that demonstrated the faith that was in his heart. He didn’t talk one way and live another.
Point: By Faith Enoch Preached
To walk with God is to stand for God and to preach against the world.
Jude 14-15
Methuselah is known to be the longest living person in the Bible. The name Methuselah means ‘his death shall bring judgment’ or ‘when he is dead, it shall come’. If you do the math, you may discover that he passes the year God brings forth the water and floods the earth during Noah’s preaching.
Enoch’s message was that this was an ungodly society. He was so different than his generation. Enoch was the great grandfather of Noah, whom the Bible says also walked with God. I have personally heard nothing great about the movie which bears this name. Should not be surprised: Hollywood vs our lives.
Enoch (like Noah later) was warning everyone of the impending judgments of God. This also gives us an idea of what was happening in the rest of the world. The other sons and daughters of Adam were going the way of Cain (Jude 11) They were doing ungodly things and speaking against God. Apparently Enoch was the kind of person that refused to give in to his surrounding culture (Jude 14). Enoch’s life was not controlled by the world; He was a man who was separated to the task of getting out God’s message. The Apostle Paul preached of righteousness, temperance, & judgment to come! So did Enoch!

Luke 10:30-37
Many of us are very familiar with this story—with this parable. Did you miss the point? If you know the law, do it. If you know what is right, do it. 2 aspects: to love God and to love your neighbor. Brothers and sisters, we need to do it. We have a mission field here in the Columbus metropolitan area.
Jesus said that he had answered correctly, in Greek orthos meaning correct belief. He got the right answer. Verse 28 you will live. In Greek, meaning that you apply it. So Jesus ultimately challenged this man with “do it”.
What’s the point? We are all in a mission field. Do what you know because you love God. Embrace your mission field and don’t think the mission field is only overseas. See the needs around you like the good Samaritan.

Point: By Faith Enoch had a Glorious Exit
Hebrews 11:1-6
He sought God’s reward (he believed that God is a rewarder of those who seek Him). Psalm 58:11 says that “surely the righteous are rewarded” and Proverbs 11:18 states that if you sow righteousness, you will reap a reward.
Enoch sought the reward and that reward was God! Are you walking with God faithfully and totally dependent especially when all around you are images or portrayals of lives that are more committed to a hobby, relationship and not to God?
To walk with God means to walk continually with him (300 years). Its not about just beginning but maintaining. He walked with God for another 300 years after the birth of his son! Think about that! That is quite an achievement!

What an “Epitaph for a man to put on his tombstone! (if he actually had a funeral)
The greatest testimony that could be placed on a man’s tombstone was that which is recorded in
Genesis 5:24 says…. “And Enoch walked with God: and HE WAS NOT….. for God took him.”
By Faith Walk with God in a way that pleases Him
By Faith Preach the Word
By Faith stay strong in His grace and have a glorious exit
Brothers and sisters, God wants to build your faith and to build your love for Him. This is the kind of walk we all need today—especially if we are going to impact our families and our communities. This is the kind of walk we need if we are going to also have a glorious exit.
Let us walk consistently with the Lord in humility and obedience. Let us avoid being lukewarm and accept the life that pleased Him and accept a walk that is by faith. And to God be the Glory. Amen.
