Sunday sermon presented by: Glenn Geeting (7/31/2011)
GLENN’S NOTES:
Sermon- Knowing our Place with God
Intro
Matt 5:7-9
7Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Larger than life
Matt 18:21-35 Parable of the Unmerciful Servant
Get this, will live the beatitudes. Don’t get this- may be religious but won’t be spiritual.
1. Mercy
Latin word misericordia, from which ours is derived. It is composed of two words: miserans, pitying, and cor, the heart; or miseria cordis, pain of heart.
Gr eleemone- compassionate, full of pity
You reap what you sow
Ex- H and kids to slums, boy with no clothes, no parents, no food
Get in people’s lives
Hard to get out of our bubble to see the suffering- out of our own home/work
James 2:13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!
>$1100 to Ivory Coast. Generous! I suspect that it was uncomfortable for some.
Like God!
The word mercy, among the Jews, signified two things: the pardon of injuries, and almsgiving.
Mercy blesses him who receives and him who gives
Nothing to forgive? Means you haven’t been around people much, not given heart
The merciful are happy- nothing relieves our burdens like focusing on the needs of others
A mother once approached Napoleon seeking a pardon for her son. The emperor replied that the young man had committed a certain offense twice and justice demanded death.
“But I don’t ask for justice,” the mother explained. “I plead for mercy.”
“But your son does not deserve mercy,” Napoleon replied.
“Sir,” the woman cried, “it would not be mercy if he deserved it, and mercy is all I ask for.”
“Well, then,” the emperor said, “I will have mercy.” And he spared the woman’s son.
Luis Palau, Experiencing God’s Forgiveness, Multnomah Press, 1984.
2. Pure of heart
Gr- Katharos- clean, pure, unstained, kardia= heart
Reuters report from Stockholm, Sweden- long arrived at sexual freedom and liberality, more than 60s. Only 5% of girls and 2% of boys go into their marriages with their purity intact. In 1974 a research firm surveyed 35,000 young people from the ages of 16-25, only 31% viewed pre-marital relationships as morally wrong, compared with 52% in 1969. Abortion- only 58% saw it as wrong, now it’s 45%. The proportion who considered living a clean moral life as a very important value fell from 71% to 52%.
US- What was considered pornography 30 years ago is now seen as legitimate advertising material. 12% of pastors had committed adultery while in the ministry, “Christians- 23% had committed adultery. Days of Noah?
Pure motives
I can see your actions (hand), but can only guess at your motives (heart). But God can…
Cleaning the outside of the cup like a Pharisee, or dealing with your heart?
Work hard to purify my heart? Can’t- pray, fast, meditate- God’s Spirit needs to do this
When was the last time you got really open?
Like a clean mirror- does our heart reflect God’s face?
1 Jn 1:6-7 light and darkness
To see God- like being in the presence of a king, great honor
Cambodian’s understand this- different tenses with royalty
3.Peacemakers
Gr- eirinopoios= pacific, loving peace
Not passive, but making peace
Peace-allowers. It’s hard work to make peace, build trust
Can’t make our own peace with God because we have nothing to offer
Woe to the peace-breakers!
Our legal system is messed up- creates contention and doesn’t bring reconciliation
Feuds start small, stupid
Vendetta- need for revenge passed to next family member- common in cultures with weak law
Genuine apology- takes real maturity and strength- ends quarrel early
